In this chapter, the regiment is just kind of sitting around. The Lieutenant comes up and says if they would have gone a hundred more yards they would have been better off and more successful. At this point the rest of the regiment is pretty unhappy with the lieutenant because they just were praising themselves on how they are unable to be beat. Then two younger men come up to Henry and Wilson saying that the Lieutenant asked the colonel about who carried the flag during battle, the colonel told him that Henry Fleming did and that Wilson went to the front line to keep fighting. After the lieutenant heard this he said that Henry and Wilson deserve all the praise they get.
-Why is the Lieutenant so upset when they just won?
