THESIS

In the book The Red Badge of Courage, Henry and Wilson always have each others backs and look out for each other even though they have differences and conflicts between each other. They both are experiencing the same feelings through out the war and because of this they gain a brotherhood through out the story between one another.

1st Point:

Henry and Wilson have their differences between each other in different parts of the story. Just a few examples of them would be towards the beginning of the story when Henry is just looking around noticing everybody in his regiments different personality and see’s that Wilson is pretty loud and obnoxious, were Henry on the other hand is shy and stays to himself.

“There was a youthful private who listened with eager ears to the words of the tall soldier and to the varied comments of his comrades. After receiving a fill of discussions concerning marches and attacks, he went to his hut and crawled through an intricate hole that served it as a door. He wished to be alone with some new thoughts that had lately come to him” (Crane 1.14).

2nd Point:

A conflict that Henry and Wilson have is when they are both on the battle field and they both see that their guy that is holding the American flag is shot, they both hurry and try and carry the flag. They argue and shove about it for awhile until their Lieutenant splits them up and sends one of them to the frontline and one to hold the flag.

“The youth and his friend had a small scuffle over the flag. "Give it t' me!" "No, let me keep it!" Each felt satisfied with the other's possession of it, but each felt bound to declare, by an offer to carry the emblem, his willingness to further risk himself. The youth roughly pushed his friend away”(Crane 20.3).

3rd Point:

Even though they may have these differences and conflicts in the end they are both able to help each other out when they’re going through rough times. Some hard times would be when Wilson isn’t quite sure he is going to make it through a this battle he is fighting when he has already seen a few men die, so he gave Henry a yellow envelope and asks Henry if he dies to give it to his family.

In chapter 13 when Henry returns to camp with a head injury that Wilson notices first. Wilson talks to the commanders and they agree that it was a graze. So Wilson helps out Henry by wrapping and taking care of his injury then puts him to sleep.

“The loud young soldier watched his comrade with an air of satisfaction. He later produced an extensive handkerchief from his pocket. He folded it into a manner of bandage and soused water from the other canteen upon the middle of it. This crude arrangement he bound over the youth's head, tying the ends in a queer knot at the back of the neck.

"There," he said, moving off and surveying his deed, "yeh look like th' devil, but I bet yeh feel better" (Crane 13.29).

“"It's my first and last battle, old boy," continued the loud soldier. "Something tells me--"

"What?"

"I'm a gone coon this first time and--and I w-want you to take these here things--to--my--folks." He ended in a quavering sob of pity for himself. He handed the youth a little packet done up in a yellow envelope” (Crane3.60).

Saving Private Ryan

Light & Dark- right thing to do and wrong thing to do. This would take place toward the beginning when two Nazi soldiers surrendered but they were killed anyways for the heck of it.

Noise & Silence- When they were waiting for the Germans the music was playing but then when they finally see them coming. the music stops and its just a silence.

Youth & Maturity- The Corporal/ Translator is too scared to kill anyone, but finally after he lets a Nazi kill his partner and let him go, he ends up capturing him but kills him instead.

Clean & Dirty- This would take place when on of the men dies and gives his letter home to another soldier to send home, and instead of sending it home all bloody and dirty, he rewrites his letter on a dry and clean piece of paper.

The Dead Soldier-Wade would represent the kill one soldier but save 1ten times or maybe twenty times as many men.

The Flag- this is what they are fighting for and what the reminds them of home or maybe the war.

The Hand- The General/ Teacher ended up noticing that his hand just randomly shook for no apparent reason. He know that it started be cause of the war. Then towards the end when he's dying, his hand stops.

Courage- They all had to have or build up courage when they were charging the bunkers.

Manhood-Private Ryan Reached his manhood when he decided to stay and fight with his regiment instead of go back to Iowa with his mom. He said his mom would understand if he stayed and fought not only for his brothers death, not only for his country, but to fight for the only brothers he has left, which would be the men in his regiment who he's been fighting with.

Themes & Motifs

Disregard for Human Life- in war you have to get over your morals and kill the people that are trying to kill you.
Noise and Silence- the noise was the commotion of the war going on. the silence were the times when henry wasnt fighting and just thinking.
Light and Dark- light and dark has to do with the fighting scenes. when there was fighting going on it always seemed to be dark but when it was over the light poked through the clouds.
Clean and Dirty-when he started he was clean and had no experience but at the end he was dirty but had all the experience he could have wanted.
Manhood- This goes along with courage in my mind anyway. manhood was dealt with when henry decided to run he thought everybody would make fun of him because he ran and he wasnt man enough.
Self-preservation- this also deals with when henry ran. he ran to take care of himself instead of the rest of the regiment.
The Flag- this could possibly represent the pride and the sense of a win coming near. when they get the flag everybodys moral was boosted.
Youth and Maturity- the youth and maturity showed when he was thinking. He kept thinking oh i cant believe i ran but when he finally was mature enough to let it go he became a great fighter in the war.
The Dead Soldier- the dead soldier represented the possible future and maybe even fear. This makes henry realize what could happen to him.

Characters

Henry Fleming-"The young solider" who fights in the american civil war on the union side. In the begining of his experience he is very questiony about his courage and just kind of shys away from battle, but then towards the end of the book he stands up and fights with courage and dominates.
Jim Conklin- is Henry's fried but also referred to "The tall solider." Jim dies early in the book from his wounds.
Wilson-Alos one of Henry's friends but also known as "The loud solider." Wilson and Henry get to be really great friends in this book, because they are experiencing the same things and are looking out for each other.
The tattered man- this is a solider who was shot twice that Henry encounters and ends up ditching him because he gets annoyed.
Lieutenant- is Henry's commander while in battle.
Henry's mom-Though not mentioned a lot in the story, Henry's mother is a big reason why Henry is fighting so hard toward the end. She is a big motivation in Henry's life

Chp. 24

So in this chapter, Henry's regiment is caommanded to retrace back to the river where they began. The war is finally over. Henry begins to recolect the past and the present. He looks back and frowns upon the coward he used to be and feels terrible for deserting the tattered man. But then he seems to forget about the past and think about the present and what he has accomplished. I think that Henry will be more self confident now, and be able to go back home with strength and courage for what he has done.

Chp. 23

So now in chapter 23 they are still fight and the colonel tells the men that they need to charge or be killed where they are. They charge the enemies fence still fighting, Henry sees that the enemies flag barrer has been shot and killed. So he thinks that capturing the enemies flag would be a great accomplishment. Then he runs over to the flag and Wilson takes it from the dead soldiers hands. The enemy has been driven back and defeated once again. They end up taking 4 prisoners of war. The chapter ends with the men celebrating their victory and Wilson and Henry dicussing their great.

-Why would they need extra men to take care of and watch?

Chp.22

In this chapter, Henry can see two regiments fighting each other and men running all over the place. Henry and his men could hear the enemy charging once again. They prepare for the attack and stand firm waiting for it and the fight begins with gunfire. The enemy is getting dangerously close, so close that Henry can see there faces. Henry is still holding the flag and fighting. The enemy gets position behind a fence where they are able to fight and be protected at the same time. Most of the men from Henry's regiment are being killed or injured. Henry then looks for Wilson and finds him still fighting. Henry says he will keep on fighting until his death.

-While don't they just find cover somewhere?

Chp. 21

In this chapter, the regiment is just kind of sitting around. The Lieutenant comes up and says if they would have gone a hundred more yards they would have been better off and more successful. At this point the rest of the regiment is pretty unhappy with the lieutenant because they just were praising themselves on how they are unable to be beat. Then two younger men come up to Henry and Wilson saying that the Lieutenant asked the colonel about who carried the flag during battle, the colonel told him that Henry Fleming did and that Wilson went to the front line to keep fighting. After the lieutenant heard this he said that Henry and Wilson deserve all the praise they get.

-Why is the Lieutenant so upset when they just won?

Chp. 20

In chapter twenty, Henry and Wilson are fighting over carrying the flag while also fighting their enemy. Henry's Lieutenant calls him a mule driver and goes to the front line as a color bearer. At this point they can't even see their enemy because of all the smoke that has built up from cannons and guns. Once the smoke finally clears they see a lonely field of dead bodies of their enemy. So Henry is relieved he made it through another battle.

-Why are Henry and Wilson wasting time over carrying the flag? Just allow one of them to do it and keep fighting.

chp. 19

So this chapter starts of with the battle just beginning. They are charging toward the enemy, and while doing that guys to Henry's left and right are getting shot down while he is still going. The commander was yelling to start fighting but pretty much all the men were stunned and were in like a daze until Wilson fires the fist shot and wakes them up, and begin to fight. After a while they move to a different spot on the battle field. While crossing, the man carrying the US flag was shot down, and so wilson and Henry take over his position while still fighting.

-Why don't they start off in a good spot to begin with instead of moving all over the place?

chp. 18

So Henry comes upon this wounded soldier named Jimmie Rodgers. He says he needs water but there is no water for Henry to give him. He kinda looks around and sees all the wounded soldiers and continues to hear gunfire. The camandor tells the regiment that the rebels are forming another attack and that they are suppose to go and fight them. He also tells them that he doesn't know if they will all make it back alive. Henry and Wilson look at each other and are pretty confident that they will make it and do there best.
-Why is he so unsure about this battle?

chp.17

so they begin to battle and Henry just goes crazy until finally the Enemy decided to retreat. Which didn't take long. The general said that if he had 10,00 men like henry, he would win the battle in a week. Then all start looking at him as a war devil, and Henry looks at himself like a hero. The lieutenant was pretty impressed and mentions that they are the best regiment ever.

-What got into Henry?

chp. 16

So the regiment is marching towards the sound of battle and gunfire. The find a trench and just kind of settle down there waiting for the enemy to come and attack. After waiting for a while the general decides to move them into the forest where Henry thinks the enemy is waiting for them. Henry freaks out and blames the Generals for pretty much every wrong thing they have done wrong in battle and how they were idiots for moving from the trench to into a forest.

-Why doesn't Henry just fight and do the best he can instead of finding excuses for everything?

Chp. 15

So they're just kind of sitting around the camp and Henry is about ready to give back the yellow envelope that Wilson gave him to give to his parents if he dies but decides not to for some reason.
-Why doesn't he give it to him.
Later on Wilson ends up asking for the note, and looks over it. Wilson seems kind of disappointed of how he looked at death back when he wrote the letter.

Chp. 14

So Henry wakes up hearing rustling from the men getting ready. Wilson ask Henry how he feels. Henry tells Wilson that e doesn't feel too great. Then they talk about how the war is going and stuff like that. Wilson thinks they will easily win but Henry wasn't too sure from what he's seen earlier. Then theres a little scuffle between two other guys that Wilson ends up breaking up. This also shows how Wilson has matured and even has become more of a leader.

-Why were the guys fighting?

chp. 13

Alright so Henry arrives back at camp. Wilson was suprised to see him becasue he thought he was dead. Wilson see's Henry's head, and Henry tells him that he thinks he got shot. Wilson goes and tells the commanders, and they tell them that they think it's just a graze. So Wilson Wraps Henry's head and puts him to sleep.

-Why doesn't henry just tell Wilson what really happened to his head?

Quiz 2

Henry is referred to as "the youth" and Wilson is referred to as "the loud private." How has each character changed from the beginning of the story to now, specifically in regards to these monikers? Use specific examples from the story to support your answer.

-The loud one isn't really loud anymore because he has seen a lot of stuff and is more content with his feelings. I also think it has to do something with maturing while be being i the army.
The Youth, which is Henry is more of a man because again he has seen a lot of thing while being in the army and has matured and had to fend for himself.

chp. 12

In chapter twelve, when Henry finally gets a good look at the battle field, he notices that the blue line is getting swarmed by the enemy. Henry keeps watching, and then he see's that the blue start retreating and running right toward him to the forest. So once all these me are running through the forest, Henry grabs and ask this random dude what was going on. The man tells Henry to let him go, Henry asks he what was happening, then the guy takes his rifle and nails him on the head. So Henry is now on the ground all bloodied, and this other helps him up and brings him to his regiments camp. Henry is kinda wondering why he didn't see his face.

-Why wouldn't Henry just run with all the other soldiers?

Friday, November 21, 2008

chp. 11

So in chapter eleven, Henry is just kind of hiding in the woods and watching the battle field, just knod of seeing who is winning and who isn't. He doesn't really have any doubt that the blue colored shirts will win and return to camp. Now knowing this he has to think of a story of why he wasn't fighting and or on the batttle field so his comrades don't call him a coward.

-How hard could it be to make up a story? Just tell them that he was working on a couple wounded soldiers or somethin....

chp. 10

In chapter ten, The tattered man is still following Henry. They leave Jim's corpse and the tattered man starts saying how he doesn't feel good but he's not going to die because his children need him to survive. Then he starts thinking that Henry is someone else and how he doesn't know why he's still alive because of his wound to his head. At this point Henry just tries to leave the tattered man even though he knows that he shouldn't be leaving him there to die.

-Why is the tattered man man talking all this nonsense?

Chp. 9

Chapter nine, I think is a big chapter in this book! Henry is looking around seeing all these dead and wounded men and wishes he had a "red badge of courage." He find the spectral soldier he saw earlier but now his face is gray and is starring at nothing. After looking at him he realizes its Jim and cries out in anger and horror. Jim tells Henry that he has been shot. Henry tells Jim that he has to move into the woods so he doesn't get run over by the enemies wagons. So Henry tries to move him but Jim tells Henry not to touch him. Jim ends up putting enough strength together to get behind some bushes, so Henry and the tattered man fallow him. While going to the bush, Henry watches in horror while Jim convulses and dies. This point Henry is very angry and clenches his fists and yells.

-Is Henry going to start fighting now?

Chp. 8

In chapter, Henry hears the roar of gunfire and battle. He hurries toward the sound and he comes upon a stumbling man with a bloody head and a dangling arm. He tries to avoid this wounded man, but the guy keeps fallowing him and talking to him about courage and how he never ran away. He then asks Henry where he has been wounded, and Henry quickly walks away, trying to avoid answering the mans question.

-Why doesn't Henry stop and make sure the guy is going to be okay?

Chp. 7

So in chapter seven, Henry is kind of made at the guys who stayed and fought against the enemy, while the other soldiers including himself ran away. He feels as though they made him look cowardly and scared. But now that he's in the forest he feels comforted by nature and decides to take a little stroll. When he's strolling through the forest he comes upon a dead corpse wearing a uniform such as his own. He stares at it for awhile and notices that ants are crawling all over his face. Henry decides to walk away, still speechless about what he just saw.

-Why is Henry mad that other men stood and fought, instead of running away?

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Chp. 6

In Chapter 6, Henry and all the guys in his regiment are congratulating one another about their little battle. When all of a sudden they find out that their enemy is coming back to fight. Henry all of a suddenly doesn't feel good anymore and isn't as confident as he was before about his courage. He and the other guys start retreating as fast as they can. Henry darts past pretty much everybody including the general who was telling people what to do. Finally he stops and hears that the enemy has been held back.

-How has the enemy been held back?

Chp. 5

In Chapter five, Henry gets to experience his first live battle. He's a little scared at first, but once he actually realizes whats going on he fires his gun and reloads it again and again and again. He notices that someone out of his regiment tries to retreat and he is beat down by his lieutenant standing back from all the action. Their enemy ends up retreating and Henry and his regiment have kind of a huge relief and are congratulating one another.

- Why is Henry so surprised that the world and nature keeps doing what it does while everybody is shooting one another?

Chp. 4

In chapter four, they're in a little grove. Their lieutenant's hand got shot so this 304th regiment with more veterans take over cause they feel they are more experienced. Now at this point Henry know that he will no think less of himself if he does feel like running away.

-Why does Henry feel that if he puts all he's got into battle that he won't make it home?

Chp. 3

So chapter three starts off with all the soldiers tired and weak, so the end up sleeping. Henry gets woken up by Wilson and the sound of gunfire in the distance. Their commanders lead them forward to the firing, and finally reach some action. Henry seems very terrified at this point and seems to be doing all he can to stay out of the way and stay alive. Once Wilson has seen a few people die, he gives Henry a yellow envelope and asks him to give it to his family.

-Why does Wilson seem so ready to die all the time when Henry doesn't?

In Chapter Two, the regiment gets told that they don't have to face any battle. Henry seems somewhat relieved but still doubts his own courage. Later on they get a notice that they have to start marching. Now the whole regiment is wondering when they are going to see battle. Henry doesn't really get in their conversation because he's still concerning about himself. Finally he asks Wilson if he would ever run in battle. Pretty much Wilson tells him that he will stand and fight.

-Why do they prefer themselves as; the tall one, the youth, and the loud one?

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

In chapter one, four major characters are introduced. Henry Fleming, who is the main character, is questioning his courage and weather or not he is going to run from battle or be able to stand and fight. Conklin, who is Henry's friend or war buddy, is also questioning courage, and now Henry doesn't feel as bad knowing that other soldiers are feeling the same way as him. Henry's mom, who is back home and disagreed with Henry's decision on fighting. Even though she disagreed with him, she is still going to support him and be proud for him if he come back home alive or not. Wilson, who seems to be the loud and somewhat obnoctious one in their regiment, but also Henry's friends.

-Why is Henry questioning his courage now? When he has already signed up and he mentally knew that he was going to have to fight for what he believes in.
