In Chapter five, Henry gets to experience his first live battle. He's a little scared at first, but once he actually realizes whats going on he fires his gun and reloads it again and again and again. He notices that someone out of his regiment tries to retreat and he is beat down by his lieutenant standing back from all the action. Their enemy ends up retreating and Henry and his regiment have kind of a huge relief and are congratulating one another.
- Why is Henry so surprised that the world and nature keeps doing what it does while everybody is shooting one another?
