In chapter one, four major characters are introduced. Henry Fleming, who is the main character, is questioning his courage and weather or not he is going to run from battle or be able to stand and fight. Conklin, who is Henry's friend or war buddy, is also questioning courage, and now Henry doesn't feel as bad knowing that other soldiers are feeling the same way as him. Henry's mom, who is back home and disagreed with Henry's decision on fighting. Even though she disagreed with him, she is still going to support him and be proud for him if he come back home alive or not. Wilson, who seems to be the loud and somewhat obnoctious one in their regiment, but also Henry's friends.
-Why is Henry questioning his courage now? When he has already signed up and he mentally knew that he was going to have to fight for what he believes in.
